LAPD ends protection of former Vice President Kamala Harris After Backlash

The Los Angeles Police Department has discontinued its temporary security detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris, following sharp criticism that officers were being diverted from crime suppression duties.

The arrangement began last week after President Donald Trump revoked Harris’s Secret Service protection, which had been extended by President Biden until July 2026. In response, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass directed LAPD officers to assist the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in protecting Harris at her Brentwood home.

The move quickly drew backlash from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, which argued that officers should not be pulled away from protecting “everyday Angelenos” to guard a “multi-millionaire who can afford her own security.”

On Saturday, LAPD ended its involvement, though CHP has not clarified how it will continue protection. Harris is expected to hire private security in the near future.

The decision comes as Harris prepares for a 15-stop international book tour promoting her memoir 107 Days. While Harris previously faced heightened threats during her vice presidency, recent Secret Service assessments found no credible current threats.

This is not the first time Harris has drawn LAPD security controversy; she received local police protection as a senator between 2017 and 2018, before it was withdrawn after a reassessment.
